How do I burn in oil my Plancha grill?
Congratulations on your new Plancha BBQ grill! Whether you have a Corten steel or powder-coated black steel model, it is essential that you season the steel Cooking plate properly before you start cooking. This process is the first step towards years of safe, tasty and maintenance-friendly cooking.
By properly oiling your Plancha, you develop a natural non-stick coating (also known as 'seasoning') that prevents food from sticking and protects your plate from rusting.
β Why is oiling important?
During the production of a Plancha grill, a layer of factory oil or protective coating is usually applied. This layer is not suitable for cooking and must therefore be completely removed first.
Then apply a safe layer of oil and heat it. This creates a dark, protective oil layer on the cooking plate.
- Your Plancha will last longer
- Food sticks less easily
- The plate is easier to clean.
- Less chance of rust and damage
Β What do you need to burn in your Plancha??
- Dry and clean wood (no painted wood)
- 8-10 wood wicks or 2-4 Eco-Lighters
- Kitchen paper or a cotton cloth
- Olive oil or an oil with a low burning point
Additional tips:
- The more often you bake, the better, darker and thicker the protective layer becomes.
- Never use water or soap on a hot plate.
- Rub the plate with oil after each use to prevent rusting.
Step 1: Light the fire
Place dry wood in the fire bowl of your Plancha and light it with wood wicks or Eco-Lighters (8 to 10 pieces usually work well if you use wood wicks). (2 to 4 for Eco-Lighters) Allow the fire to burn steadily and slide the wood under the cooking plate so that the factory oil on the steel cooking plate heats up properly. This takes about 25 to 30 minutes. Add extra wood if necessary to keep the fire going.
Step 2: The first coat of oil
Take a piece of paper towel, pour some olive oil on it, and lightly rub it into the baking tray. Then allow the oil to soak in and partially burn off. This takes about 15 to 25 minutes. This step forms the first layer of the natural non-stick coating.
Step 3: Repeat for optimal protection
Repeat step 2 once more for an even better protective layer. Allow this layer to soak in and burn in thoroughly as well. After this second application, your plancha is ready for use!
Step 4: Time to bake
Place the meat on the baking tray and experience the ease of cooking on a well-seasoned plancha. If the meat does stick, simply repeat the process of brushing a little olive oil onto kitchen paper and applying it precisely where needed.
